Rivers state – Governor Siminalayi Fubara has been urged to discontinue any plan to demolish the Rivers state house of assembly quarters located along Aba Road in Port Harcourt.
Elders and leaders in Rivers state gave the warning when they paid a surprise visit to the quarters to assess the condition of the buildings on Sunday, May 12.
The elders comprise and present members of the National Assembly, local government chairmen, and opinion leaders, The Nation reports.
The leaders were received by Martins Amaewhule-led house of assembly lawmakers and were taken around the structures and the auditorium.
The facility currently serves as a chamber for the Rivers state lawmakers.
Amaewhule said:
The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, said they were worried about reports of another impending demolition and decided to assess the condition of the premises.
As reported by Daily Trust, prominent leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) members in the oil-rich state such as Desmond Akawor, Kingsley Chindah, Olaka Nwogu, Chief Tony Okocha, among others were part of the protest over the alleged plan of the state government to demolish the complex.
Meanwhile, TimesNow.com.ng reported that Fubara ordered the relocation of the Rivers state house of assembly to the Government House, Port Harcourt.
This was after the governor gazetted Executive Order 001 relocating the state assembly due to the burning of the Hallowed Chamber.
The state house of assembly was set ablaze on October 29th, 2023 and the gazette ordering its relocation was dated December 14th, 2023.
